Gastroesophageal reflux is the backflow of contents of the stomach into the esophagus that is often the result of incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter. Gastric juices are acidic and therefore produce burning pain in the esophagus. Repeated episodes of reflux often result in gastroesophageal reflux disease, or G.E.R.D. The frequent acid in the esophagus can cause esophagitis, inflammation of the esophageal mucosa. A possible cause of increased acid in the stomach is the lack of adequate digestive enzymes and/or the lack of adequate digestion.
